Formentera island

Formentera island

Location: small island close to Ibiza – 45 minutes to an hour by boat

Description: 19 kilometres in length, the Formentera island is situated in approximately 3 nautical miles (6 km) in the South of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. The main villages of the Formentera island are Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola, Es Pujols and La Savina. The island is known for its spotless beaches. It is simply one of the last Mediterranean delights where the beaches take your breath away.

In the Formentera island, life is slow and enjoyable where inhabitants and visitors alike are content with the simple, healthy lifestyle as emphasised by the most popular form of transport; cycling or walking along the excellent cycle paths and well-marked hiking trails.

In the north of the Formentera island is the small island of Espalmador, a little uninhabited island just a few meters offshore at the most northern point of Formentera with pure white beaches and fabulously clear waters. There are no buildings on this island and it is visited mainly by luxury yacht owners.

You can see this paradise from Playa de Illetes but although it looks close enough to touch, the strong currents prevent you trying to swim to it. It therefore remains exclusively for those who can reach it by boat and by taking the little ferryboat from the port of La Savina. It is possible to go there without having a posh yacht!

One of the delights on Es Palmador, and lots of fun, are the mud baths. Right in the middle of this tranquil island is a natural mud bath that’s easy to find. Head along the far north end of Platja de s’Alga (s’Alga beach) and follow the narrow pathway through the scrubland that backs the beach

You will arrive at a wide salt plain that has liquid mud at its centre. Although it has no therapeutic benefits, but there is nothing better than rolling about or wallowing in cooling mud on a hot sunny day! Let it dry as you walk back towards the beach then dive into the clear sea to clean off the excess mud. A great experience and the kids will love it!

Called “Illa de s’Empalmador. Espalmador is separated from Formentera by a shallow but dangerous sandbank (strong undercurrents). In the South of the island – the cape of Berberia, with its powerful lighthouse allows ships to enter the Mediterranean sea by the Strait of Gibraltar.

Directions: From the Ibiza, San Antonio or Figueretes ports, there are many departures to the Formentera island every day, several times a day. Don’t forget that the Formentera island gets very crowded in high season.
