Description: At the geographical heart of the island you will find the village of Santa-Gertrudis which is a microcosm of Ibiza. Steeped in tradition, its main square houses the whitewashed church and a cluster of bars, restaurants and shops. Along the rich agricultural landscape abounds in livestock such as, sheep, goats and dairy cows.
Santa-Gertrudis is also a home away from home for the many new residents from Europe and beyond who have brought a unique, Bohemian style of life to the village. Many artists, sculptors and musicians have settled here over the years and their art can be noticed throughout the village – in galleries and most notably at the Bar Costa where impoverished artists during the hippie era would swap paintings for a meal. This art now hangs along with the cured ham throughout the bar.
Santa-Gertrudis has expanded rapidly but carefully over the last few years. Smart modern villas now line the new repaired streets as the village square has had a makeover and is now a pedestrian friendly plaza. New, hip café bars and restaurants have joined traditional Ibicenco establishments as the village’s eatery scene has increased dramatically.
A visit through Santa-Gertrudis is perfect any time of day. The village is lined with arts and crafts shops, galleries, and an eclectic mix of apparel and accessories. There’s plenty of retail therapy to be had before and after morning coffee, lunch, or an afternoon “merienda” or a bite before dinner.
Try the Musset Cafe for morning coffee and freshly baked bread, Bar Costa for its delicious “Jamon Serrano”, or Manchego cheese, and enjoy the crackling log fires in winter. Also, Es Canto is great for its traditional hearty fare, Bacchus for its modern cuisine and lunchtime special menus, or take a stroll for a special meal around La Plaza at sundown.
Santa-Gertrudis is also home of the international book shop Libro Azul, with English editions and a large selection of beautiful photography. At Casi Todo, there are auctions twice a month in English and Spanish, where everything from unwanted items such as; antiques furniture, paintings and even trinkets, are sold to the highest bidder.
